Influenced heavily by the X-men comics, Chinese science fiction writer Li Sunwei has just published his new novel. Like the X-men, it is set in the near future, where a war is brewing between humans and mutants. There are those on both sides who want to fight, but also those who fight to keep the peace.
Gou-rou: Hi, Mr Li. From the intro to your work (above) it would seem that your story is very similar to the X-men plot.
Mr Li: Well there are many important details that are different. In my story, the mutation is much more realistic. The mutants are mutated in that they were all born without appendixes, the humans fear these new creatures and some want to wipe them out.
Gou-rou: So what special powers do the mutants have?
Mr Li: Their only mutation is that they have no appendix. Other than that they are identical to normal humans.
Gou-rou: How do the humans recognise that they are mutants?
Mr Li: Humans find out during routine surgery or internal scans of the mutants for medical reasons. If the mutant manages to flee, it is hunted by the humans.
Gou-rou: So basically the novel wouldn't really make for a spectacular film then?
Mr Li: No. But as I am Chinese, I am sure we can find some "patriotic" production company who will make it.
